The Hinterland Will Turn Into Sea

For a few years, the Bahia state government has been turning the state into a laboratory for facial recognition technologies. These technologies are proclaimed as simple solutions to public safety problems and exploited as a propaganda piece for “efficient” management; data analysis makes it clear that these technologies do not produce the miraculous effects promised by public managers. On the contrary, facial recognition has not answered the severe problem of police violence in the state and has no significant effect on public safety rates. Moreover, there is a high investment in these modern algorithmic technologies. In contrast, essential technologies that guarantee a higher quality of life and management of space – such as basic sanitation – are lateralized. There is a sea of contrasts in the construction and internalization of public security policy in Bahia that has facial recognition algorithmic technologies as its lure.
